XYLAZINBIO 2%

Solution for Injection

COMPOSITION

1 ml of clear, colorless solution for injection contains 23.3 mg Xylazine hydrochloride equivalent to 20.0 mg Xylazine.

 

UNDESIRED/SIDE EFFECTS

Cardiac rhythm disturbances, inhibition of thermoregulation, paradoxical signs of excitement, hyperglycemia and polyuria, reversible local tissue irritations may be seen. Hypotension, bradycardia, and bradypnea may occur after short-term hypertension. Xylazine causes vomiting in dogs and cats.

In ruminant animals; Increased salivation, slowing of rumen movements, tympani, tongue paralysis and cessation of rumination and diarrhea may develop due to these. May cause uterine contractions in cattle and sheep.

Reversible penile prolapse can occur in cattle and horses.

DRUG INTERACTIONS

Xylazine enhances the effect of barbiturates. The dose should be reduced when used with anesthetics, tranquilizers and neuroleptics. Since xylazine sensitizes the heart to adrenaline, caution should be exercised when used with adrenaline.  

SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSE, PRECAUTIONS AND ANTIDOTE

In case of accidental overdose with xylazine, profound sedation, bradycardia, and respiratory irregularity may occur. In case of overdose, alpha-2-adrenolytics such as yohimbine and 4-aminopyridine can be used as antidotes.

Animals sedated with xylazine should be treated with caution, as they may be awakened by external disturbances and may show immediate protective responses such as biting or kicking. In case of accidental injection by the practitioner, the physician should be consulted with the package insert.
